This course is available for people working with children and families in Staffordshire. For those working with children and families outside of Staffordshire please contact your local Safeguarding Children Board.

This course will update your Level 2 certificate to continue to be the Designated/Deputy Safeguarding Lead in your organisation for another 2 years.

Practice Outcomes

  • Increase participants’ awareness of and response to protecting children who are both at risk of or currently experiencing Intra-familial child sexual abuse.

Learning Outcomes

  • To understand the typology and prevalence of both intra and extra-familial child sexual abuse, including sibling abuse
  • Have considered how attitudes and beliefs around sexual development can have an influence on our ability to safeguard.
  • Understand and promote the importance of hearing the child’s voice and seeing their lived experience. Creating opportunities for children to disclose.
  • Have an overview of the legal and statutory guidance as well as local protocols in relation to child sexual abuse.
  • Have considered the common factors for families where child sexual abuse is a feature.
  • Have learnt to recognise the indicators of Intra-familial child sexual abuse including behavioural and physical markers.
  • Have considered the adverse impact of this type of abuse on children, both short and long term.
  • Have an awareness of the perpetrator, their modes operandi, behaviour and ability to deceive and what this means for the child, family and professionals working with that family.
  • Including person posing a risk to children (PPRC) and levels of risk
  • Have an awareness of good practice and relevant agencies who can offer therapeutic support and interventions for children and families. Including local offer.
  • Understanding of local referral pathways
  • To understand your own agencies procedures and principles of practice within the context of intra-familial child sexual abuse.
  • Understanding of local provision for children experiencing intra-familial child sexual abuse.
  • To promote the importance of multi-agency working and cooperation.
  • Understanding of the SSCB procedures and guidance in particular the Threshold Framework and Escalation Policy.
  • Using Restorative Practice to understand the importance of the child’s voice and the daily lived experience of the child. All children should be offered the opportunity to speak to a professional alone or have a suitable advocate to speak on their behalf (particularly for children who are not yet able to talk either because of their age or stage of development, because of a disability, or that English is their 2nd language) to gather their views and opinions.
  • Highlight the lessons learnt from national and local child safeguarding practice reviews, including rapid reviews (where relevant).

  • Headsets or earphones are recommended for virtual training, however if these are unavailable you must make sure you are in a private space or quiet room to maintain concentration and confidentiality.
